The MSIW network unites medical professionals dedicated to conducting medical operations in austere, contested, and denied environments or focused on irregular warfare impacts to the medical sector. The network’s primary objective is to foster global collaboration among subject matter experts, facilitating the exchange of essential insights and actions related to medical efforts within the context of irregular warfare.
In 2026, IWC via the MSIW FAN co-sponsored a summit with Mayo Clinic Military Medicine (MCMM), the National Institute for Defense Health Cooperation (NIDHC), and Destination Medical Center (DMC) on Medical Strategies for Modern Conflict Summit in Rochester, Minnesota. The summit convened experts from military medicine, civilian healthcare, government, academia, private industry, and international partners to examine how medicine must adapt to the realities of modern conflict. Participants examined conflict topics and scenarios characterized by the convergence of conventional and irregular warfare (IW). A consistent conclusion emerged: modern conflict blurs the distinction between the battlefield and civilian society, placing civilian healthcare at risk, including in the U.S. homeland. As a result, neither military nor civilian healthcare systems can independently meet the scale, complexity, or duration of medical demands imposed by future conflict. Medical resilience is a national security imperative that adversaries are actively targeting and require defending on par with other critical national infrastructure.
