Dr. Joshua Hastey

Deputy Regional Advisor for U.S. Pacific Command and U.S. Forces Korea

Dr. Joshua Hastey serves as the Deputy Regional Advisor for U.S. Pacific Command and U.S. Forces Korea at the Irregular Warfare Center (IWC). A subject matter expert in Indo-Pacific security, gray zone conflict, and U.S.-China relations, Dr. Hastey shapes the strategic research and advisory frameworks that prepare joint force partners for the nuances of great power competition. He brings extensive institutional and research excellence to the Center, spanning key appointments across prominent defense education and academic institutions.

Dr. Hastey’s foundational expertise is rooted in his distinguished academic leadership at Regent University’s Robertson School of Government, where he serves as the Director of the Master of Arts in National Security Studies program. His instructional background includes tenures teaching professional military education and international security at the U.S. Naval War College and the Daniel K. Inouye Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies, as well as instructing at Old Dominion University.

An accomplished author and security analyst, Dr. Hastey’s research explores war ethics and grand strategy. He is the author of China, Faits Accomplis and the Contest for East Asia: The Shadow of Shifting Power (Routledge 2023), which examines China’s aggressive maritime policies since 2008 and their underlying strategic logic in the contemporary security environment. His ongoing contributions to the field and recent scholarly publications can be found in peer-reviewed platforms, including the Journal of Strategic Security and Global Perspectives.

Dr. Hastey holds a Ph.D. in International Studies from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He also holds a Master’s degree in International Relations & Diplomacy from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations from William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.
